For a start, the flux of a plumbing joint can be burnt out if adequate care is not taken and if you are using the gas torch in a tight space then the extra heat may cause problems. This will mean that you will have to be wary of accidentally creating fires or burning things.

A further consideration relates to the affordability. Mapp gas is considerably more expensive than standard propane gas. This must be taken into consideration if you only intend on conducting a few repairs.

However, Mapp is favored over propane when you intend to work with pipes which may contain excess water. Mapp gas burns much hotter in comparison to propane and this makes it a great deal easier as it boils the water out much quicker.

Propane and Mapp gas not only have very different characteristics but their purposes differ too. Make your gas torch selection based upon the quantity of work required to be performed and also consider the dimensions of the material requiring repair.

Oxy Fuel Safety - Using a Cutting Torch the Right Way

Oxy fuel safety is something that is taught by few and ignored by many. But ignoring basic oxy fuel cutting torch safety principles has resulted in many injuries and even fatalities. According to OSHA's own publications, the risk of from fatal injuries using this equipment is around 4 deaths per thousand workers over a working lifetime.

The term "Oxy-fuel" refers to welding, brazing, and cutting equipment that uses a fuel gas like acetylene, map gas, propane etc. AND oxygen. Torches that use fuel and plain air do not pose the same risks that are present when using oxy fuel equipment where fuel is mixed with oxygen to produce a much hotter flame than can be achieved using only fuel and air.

These are only a few of the many safety principles you must follow when cutting with an oxy acetylene or oxy fuel torch. Pay close attention to these tips and you will be safer and your cuts will be better too.

1. Never cut on or apply heat directly to a concrete surface.

Concrete contains water, that is trapped within the material. Heat will cause the water to expand. This expansion will cause pieces of the concrete to explode.

2. Clean cutting tip orifices carefully.

The little pre-heat flames are important to keep clean, to prevent tip overheating and maximize time to bring steel to kindling temperature. It is critical that the cutting oxygen orifice is kept clean and smooth. Any roughness will dramatically effect cut quality. So if you don't have a tip cleaner, Get one!

3. Be aware of sparks - use the Good Neighbor Policy.

Cutting may produce sparks that can fly a considerable distance. Protective screens are advisable, especially if working in a confined area.

4. Use the right size tip. Each manufacturer is different but fortunately most torch makers post tip chart data online. Smith and Victor both have online tip chart information.

Turning down the torch valves to cut thinner metal is not good practice and will allow for an unsafe soft flame that will flashback and pop.

5. Where are your hoses?

Before heating or cutting, be sure to check for the location of the hoses that supply gases to your torch. Double check to insure that no slag, or workpiece will fall directly onto the hoses.

Beads are also celebrated in the glass art community and highly treasured by collectors. Before you begin on this exciting journey, learn about the essential bead making supplies that you need.

Many beadmakers opt to work with sodium lime (soft) glass because it melts quicker, has a larger color palette and does not require the amount of heat that borosilicate (hard) glass does. When purchasing soft glass, make sure that you do not accidentally select hard glass because the two materials are incompatible and will crack if used together.

Torch

Although there are many torches on the market, a Hot Head Torch is an excellent choice for the soft glass bead maker. This torch burns hot enough to make your beads, costs less than and does not need oxygen to run like other bench burners do.

Mandrels and Bead Release

When making a bead, the glass is wound around a thin, steel pipe (mandrel) that allows you to form the shape with the necessary hole in the center. Used in conjunction with the mandrel, bead release covers a portion of the pipe where you make your bead so that your design easily comes off of the mandrel when you are finished.

MAPP Gas (Propylene)

Use MAPP (propylene) gas to run your Hot Head Torch. This gas comes in a small bottle that you screw onto your torch. Find MAPP gas at a lampworking supplier, welding shop or hardware store.

Annealer or Vermiculite

After the glass is heated, the bead needs to slowly get back down to room temperature (anneal) so that it does not crack later. An annealer (kiln) is the best way to accomplish this because it holds high temperatures and controls the anneal cycle so that your work comes out intact. Even more, many kiln makers make special "bead making kilns" specifically for this glass process. If you prefer not to make an annealer investment at this time, use vermiculite. This material allows you to bury your work inside of it and then retrieve it after eight hours.

Didymium Glasses

A person who works on a bench burning torch (lampworker) must have a way to protect her eyes from the sodium glare of the heated glass. Use didymium lenses to guard against the glare.

Ventilation System

Take care to remove harmful fumes from your work station with a ventilation system. A good system may be a vented fume hood or a box fan in a window, but it depends on the type of workspace you have. Many ventilation methods exist so get more information by taking a bead making class, participating in a bead forum or contacting a lampworking supplier for help.

Use Caution When Using A Plumber Torch

A plumber torch is one of the most important tools he uses on the job. Usually consisting of a small tank of propane with a gas control nozzle attached, the torch is essential to many of the tasks he has to perform. For some jobs requiring work in close quarters, a larger tank of gas with the control nozzle attached to a set of flexible hoses is used.

Most of the plumbing being installed in today's homes is made from PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) material. Special adhesive (plumbers tape) is used to make joints that melts the surface of pieces being fit together to create a watertight seal. Not long ago, most home plumbing consisted of copper piping, which was put together with solder and a plumber torch. A good plumber needed to know not only how to fasten all these pieces of pipe together properly, but also how to do it without wrecking the rest of the water pipe system.

With plenty of experience, some plumbers are able to claim that they can make the solder they work with run uphill. Using his torch to make the top of the pipe hotter than the rest, the plumber can actually get the melted solder to flow towards the hottest part of the joint, thus causing the solder to indeed flow uphill to the other pipe and make the seal.

The BernzoMatic trigger-started cast aluminum torch head light is a self-igniting high-temperature torch head designed for easy operation. Simply pull the trigger for ignition, and release it to turn off. This head produces a swirl flame and burns propane or mapp gas. Pressure regulation allows the flame to burn in any direction and ensures consistent performance. Even while the flame burns, the replaceable brass tip stays cool. The stainless steel burn tube, cast aluminum body, and brass burn tip are constructed for durability. The BernzoMatic torch head weighs 1.3 pounds and is backed with a 1-year limited warranty.
